Digital tool to support loved ones of a suicidal family member

The Centre for Family Studies and the research centre User Centered Electronics & ICT (UCE) are developing a low-threshold, digital state of the art application to support loved ones of a suicidal family member. Despite the many challenges families face in this situation, the road to support is long and difficult. This digital (messenger) tool is being developed based on insights from our own scientific research.

An estimated 400,000 Flemish people live with someone who has had suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months. To date, attention to these close relatives has been limited in scientific literature, policy, and professional care.
Our own research shows that these individuals experience a deeply negative and long-lasting impact across all areas of life. Despite this, family members of someone with suicidal thoughts face significant barriers in seeking and receiving both formal and informal support.
This project builds on previous research into the experiences and needs of family members of a suicidal relative, with a particular focus on family dynamics and intra-familial relationships. Based on the insights gained, we will develop a state-of-the-art digital tool to support those living with a suicidal family member.
